Princeton CBE honored its 23 graduating seniors in a Class Day ceremony on Monday, May 29, conferring honors and awards for outstanding academic achievement.
"Remember to think critically and independently," said Christos Maravelias, Anderson Family Professor of Energy and the Environment and chair of chemical and biological engineering. "This is the hallmark of your Princeton education, as you serve the nation and humanity in the spirit of Princeton's informal motto."
Although the Class of 2023 was smaller than average, that size allowed the cohort to gel into an especially tight-knit community, according to several of the graduates.
Maravelias emphasized the role of this community as well as the students' various support networks — the family members and friends and organizations who sustained the graduates throughout four years of personal and academic challenges.
Twenty of the graduates earned certificates in eight different programs, including sustainable energy, materials science and engineering biology, among others.
Seven graduates earned the University's academic honors; four earned high honors; and four more students earned highest honors.
Twenty-two of the graduates were inducted into one or more honor society: Sigma Xi, for distinguished scientific research; Tau Beta Pi, recognizing outstanding engineering achievements; and Phi Beta Kappa, the nation's preeminent liberal arts honor society.
Yaxin Duan received the department's top award, the Overall Excellence in Chemical Engineering Award, recognizing her exemplary coursework.
David Amelemah won the Ernest F. Johnson Outstanding Senior Thesis Award.
Janelle Arnold and Hojoon Kim each won a Michelle Goudie '93 Senior Thesis Award.
Zihan Lin won the Ernest F. Johnson Distinguished Service Award.
Richard Huang won the Sigma Xi Book Prize.
Kevin Yeung won the Richard K. Toner Thermodynamics Prize.
Richard Huang, Zihan Lin and Elizabeth Zheleznyakova each won a Christodoulos A. Floudas Chemical Process Design Award.
A separate ceremony held by the School of Engineering and Applied Science recognized the graduating seniors as part of the full BSE program. SEAS honored four CBE Class of 2023 graduates:
Janelle Arnold won the Joseph Clifton Elgin Prize, given to a student who has done the most to advance the interests of the School in the community at large.
Bridget Denzer won the Tau Beta Pi Prize, for her service to the School of Engineering and Applied Science.
Jay Kaplan won a Calvin Dodd MacCracken Senior Thesis/Project Award, for a thesis project that is most distinctive for its inventiveness and technical accomplishment.
Michal Kozlowski won a J. Rich Steers Award, given by the New York City Post, Society of American Military Engineers to reward scholastic performance that demonstrates potential for further engineering study and practice.
