June 17, 2010

James Wei, Pomeroy and Betty Perry Smith Professor of Chemical Engineering Emeritus and Dean Emeritus of the School of Engineering and Applied Science, will receive the 2010 William W. Grimes Award for Excellence in Chemical Engineering from the Minority Affairs Committee (MAC) of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE). Named in honor of the first African-American Fellow of AIChE, the Grimes Award “recognizes a chemical engineer’s outstanding achievements as a distinguished role model for minorities”. Wei’s selection as this year’s recipient recognizes his support for the formation of MAC during his tenure as AIChE President in 1988, and for his “continued support and mentorship of students and young professional who are underrepresented minorities in chemical engineering”. The award will be presented in November, at the 2010 AIChE Annual Meeting in Salt Lake City.
